Petty, Sir William
(26 may. 1623, Romsey, Hampshire, Inglaterra–16 dic. 1687, Londres).

Economista político y estadístico británico. Renunció a una vida en el mar para estudiar medicina. Enseñó anatomía en la Universidad de Oxford. En Irlanda fundó minas, fundiciones y empresas pesqueras. También realizó varias invenciones y fue uno de los fundadores de la Royal Society. Petty dio origen al concepto de aritmética política y la definía como el arte de razonar con cifras sobre asuntos relacionados con el gobierno. En su obra más conocida, Treatise of Taxes and Contributions [Tratado de impuestos y contribuciones] (1662), se inclinó por dar rienda suelta a la fuerza de los intereses propios de los individuos, pero sostenía que era deber del Estado mantener un alto nivel de empleo. También sostenía que la mano de obra requerida para la producción era el determinante principal del valor de intercambio.
